Who else has watched the Thanksgiving episode of Master of None 17 times? Just me? Needless to say Lena Waithe has been on my mind a lot lately because lets face it, Denise is hands down the best character on that show.
The Thanksgiving episode which was co-written by Waithe and Aziz Ansari, is just too brilliant. Autostraddle dubbed it “One of the Realest Things You’ve Ever Seen on TV” which should come as no surprise as Waithe’s writing style is so honest and unapologetic.
“I don’t know if we’ve seen a sly, harem pants-wearing, cool Topshop sweatshirt-wearing, snapback hat-rocking lesbian on TV. I know how many women I see out in the world who are very much like myself. We exist. To me, the visibility of it was what was going to be so important and so exciting.” – Waithe on playing Denise in Master of None.
The incomparable Angela Davis plays Denise’s mom and the coming out scene, which takes place in a diner, leaves me teary eyed every time. According to Waithe’s Instagram (which I have spent an embarrassing amount of time scrolling through) the setting of the scene was based on her real life experience; she came out to her mom in a diner.
Here’s hoping we get to see a lot more of Waithe and characters like Denise in the future. Now I’ll leave you with this picture of Waithe and her girlfriend being all kinds of adorable!
P.S. Here’s a brilliant discussion with Waithe and Director Gina Prince-Bythewood hosted by Issa Rea!
