First things first – I sat on the toilet so long today reading about reparations that the automatic lights turned off and refused to turn back on. So there’s that.
More importantly though, check out this very cool art project called Reparations! It’s a social experiment launched as a Facebook event by conceptual artist, Natasha Marin in 2016 that has since expanded into a website and fb group.
From Facebook group About section:
“I invite People of Color to ask for what we need to feel better, be happier, be more productive by posting in this space. These may be both material and immaterial requests. I invite people who identify as White to offer services or contributions to People of Color in need of time, energy, substantive care, and support. Although this has been *widely* publicized some folks are still confused about the fact that this group is focused on bringing about healing and connection in the *present* tense. Reparations: Requests & Offerings is not about reparations for American Slavery (although this is a very valid pursuit) it’s actually about addressing present-day income inequality, community building, community care, and about bringing about much needed healing and repair for today, last week, and tomorrow.”
This is a closed group that can get very heavy at times, but it actively engages community in a way that is somewhat rare to see in conceptual work. I dig it.
